1000 Ikebana Challenge

The program starts from January and July every year. Participants are required to make 28 ikebana works in one month for 3 years. They make 336 works in one year and 1008 works in 3 years.  

News Update

Starting April 2024, the 1000 Ikebana Challenge will undergo restructuring for improved participant experience. Our Monthly Ikebana Challenge accommodates both 1000 Ikebana Challenge participants and casual participants.

Key Updates:

(1) Ikebana Dojo will conduct Zoom sessions monthly (Monthly Ikebana Challenge).
(2) Participants have the flexibility to book and attend individual sessions at their convenience. To join again, simply book another "Monthly Ikebana Challenge" session whenever you wish.
(3) 1000 Ikebana challengers are encouraged to attend at least four sessions annually for active engagement. After each session, submit your revised work to ikebana.dojo@gmail.com or publish it to the 1000 Ikebana Challenge Facebook page.

Hana Gyoja Grade 1 (after completing 336 works) 

Hana Gyoja Grade 2 (after completing 672 works)

Hana Ajari (after completing 1008 works, Ikebana Aesthetics Program Level 3 and other requirements) 

Digital certificates are issued on request. A digital logo for Hana Gyoja is available for your posts for social media. 


How to Participate


1. Read "About 1000 Ikebana Challenge", FAQOrientation to Zoom Ikebana Dojo, and Ikebana: A Flower Arrangement in Search of Poetry (Garland Magazine, #24, 2021).


2. Apply & pay the fee. Book a "Monthly Ikebana Challenge" session. The fee is non refundable. 

Applications close when fully booked. Additional sessions may be added in response to high demand.


Application period for new participants: 

(a) 1 to 30 December for January Intake.

(b) 1 to 30 June for July Intake.

Book a session in January or July to embark on your journey with us. Applications close when fully booked. Before starting, you may try our Monthly Ikebana Challenge.


3. Receive a Zoom meeting link immediately after your booking.


4. Download a sample form to track your progress. Feel free to customize it according to your preferences.


You can also keep your records in your own way or use an app. Your record will be assessed for certificate issuance. Alternatively, regularly post your work to our Facebook page, "1000 Ikebana Challenge," and you won't need to submit your records.


5. Submit an image of your work to Ikebana Dojo (ikebana.dojo@gmail.com) at least 48 hours before the Zoom session.


6. Attend the Zoom session. Benefit from constructive feedback in a friendly atmosphere. Each participant typically receives about 4 minutes. To make the most of your time, prepare specific questions like "Is my main branch too long?”


7. Refine your work based on the feedback from our facilitators.   


8. Share an image of your revised work with the 1000 Ikebana Challenge Facebook Page. Your work may be published on our website or Ikebana Gallery Facebook page. Please indicate if you prefer not to have it published. Certificates will not be issued without your revised works.
